Jami ul-Kamil by Muhaddith dhiya ur rahman hindi madani

This shaykh is originally from india . Belonged to a staunch upper class hindu brahmin family. Today he is a legend in making.  He has received his saudi citizenship as well. Before  i share the details of the book and his bio, i'd like to say quickly that i spoke the shaykh few times and the last time i spoke to him he asked me if i would volunteer to translate this book of his in english. He also said gather your friends and i can also arrange some payment for you. Subhanallah, usually its the other way around with such famous shuyukh. People pay them heavily but the shaykh's love to have ilm circulated made him offer me this amazing opportunity. I told him i will see if i can gather some people and get back to him but my schedule and other responsibilities prevented me from doing it. The shaykh is a highly qualified shaykh whom i used to call to discuss mustalah /uloomul hadeeth doubts i had while studying.  he is so busy that he rarely meets anyone . I tried to meet him when i went to madinah from kuwait but things didn't work out. May allah grant the shaykh good health, and more importantly elevate his ranks to the highest stature in the aakhirah and make his efforts a source of barakah for Muslims across the globe.

He also has other books such as this one published on our other website: http://whytheshariah.blogspot.com/2015/06/e-book-pure-shade-of-quran-in-hindi-by.html

The following is taken from the facebook posts of Brother Muhammad Al Siddiq al-Malizi (from malaysia)

Begin:

About two weeks before Ramadan, while carrying the Shaykh’s book and walking him to his car which was parked underground of the Prophet’s Mosque, I asked his permission to visit him at his residence as we had ended our exams. After some adjustments, we agreed on a date.
..........

I started following the Shaykh’s classes at the Prophet’s Mosque since the very first semester he began to teach there, which was on the subject of Mustalah al-Hadith (Hadith Nomenclature) where he commented on the book Ikhtisar ‘Ulum al-Hadith by al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir - رحمه الله - (d. 774 H). The next semester he began commenting on Sahih al-Bukhari, which we have about one volume left.

Below is a brief biography of the Shaykh found in his most recent work and his Magnum Opus, "al-Jami’ al-Kamil fi al-Hadith al-Sahih al-Shamil".

“He is Muhammad ‘Abdullah al-A’zami, Abu Ahmad, (also known in the academic circle as Muhammad Diya’ al-Rahman al-A’zami), born in the year 1362 H - 1943 M, completed his undergraduate studies at the Islamic University of Madinah, and obtained his masters degree from King ‘Abd al-‘Aziz University - Makkah branch - which later became Umm al-Qura University, and obtained his doctorate degree from al-Azhar University, Cairo, and was appointed as a professor at the faculty of hadith at the Islamic University of Madinah, and he was appointed to several academic and administrative positions, including at the Muslim World League in Makkah, and he became the dean of the faculty of hadith at the Islamic University of Madinah until he retired, after which he became completely free in doing research and writing, the most important being authoring “al-Jami’ al-Kamil fi al-Hadith al-Sahih al-Shamil”. He was appointed as a teacher at the Prophet’s Mosque by the decree of the Head of the Prophet’s Mosque Affairs in 22/2/1435 H.”
..........

His masters thesis is titled “Abu Hurayrah in the Light of his Narrations”, which was a successful effort to advocate the Companion from the accusations of orientalists and Muslim modersists on hadith. To my awe, this thesis was supervised by Shaykh Muhammad Mustafa al-A’zami, the author of ‘On Schacht's Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence’, ’The History of the Qur’anic Text’ and his Cambridge PhD thesis ‘Studies in Early Hadith Literature’ among many others including the tahqiq of Imam Malik’s Muwatta’ and Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah. Shaykh Muhammad Mustafa al-A’zami is also responsible for being the person who sparked my interest in textual criticism and hadith. Among Shaykh Muhammad Diya’ al-Rahman al-A’zami’s sudents is Dr. Abu al-Layth of IIUM, whom he taught when the later was an undergraduate student in Madinah.
..........

There are a million things could be said on this great individual, but here I’d like to direct you to Shaykh Muhammad Diya’ al-Rahman al-A’zami’s historic project which is unprecedented. Below is a part of my transcription (with slight adjustments for the sake of clarity) of our meeting at his residence about a week before Ramadan. We talked on various subjects but here I’ll only include what’s on his “al-Jami’ al-Kamil fi al-Hadith al-Sahih al-Shamil”, as brief as I can.

What is the reason you wrote "al-Jami’ al-Kamil"?

“We (Muslims) have two primary sources, the Qur’an and the Sunnah. We have the Qur’an with us, but the Sunnah is scattered in hundreds of books, some are sahih (sound), some are da’if (weak), excluding the Sahihayn of course (the Sahih of al-Bukhari and Muslim). It is supposed that we should gather and extract from these books the sahih hadiths. I was asked on this a lot while travelling to many countries, where I would give lectures on Qur’an and Sunnah: “Do you (Muslims) have a book on Sunnah which is complete, comprehensive, and authentic, like the Qur’an?” I would be perplexed to answer. What should I say? I replied: “No, we don’t have it, but we possess all of the hadiths in different books.” This answer is not satisfactory. Here I got an idea, why not I extract from these books what is sahih and compile it in a book. So, this is what I’ve been doing for the past 15 years.”

What is the number of hadiths in this book?

“With repetition, I think it’s more than 15 thousand, perhaps 20 thousand. But the sahih hadiths are between 12 thousand to 15 thousand. I included about 3 thousand of weak hadiths, but this is to show and to explain it’s weakness. Therefore under every chapter, I include some famous weak hadiths on the topic and explained its weakness.”
How many hadith sources did you refer to in the effort of compiling these sahih hadiths?
“There’s no limit. Any hadith from any book, as long as it is sahih. And when do we know if this hadith is sahih or not? This is only known after a careful study of the hadith. We will go through hundreds of thousands of isnads (chains of narration). And these hadiths in "al-Jami’ al-Kamil" comprises about 300 thousand isnads.”
When will this book be available?

“According to Dar al-Salam (the publisher), it’ll be available in Ramadan, but I don’t think so. In any case, it’ll will come out before Hajj Insha Allah. I pray that Allah accepts it.”
How many volumes is "al-Jami’ al-Kamil"?

“We’ve sent it to the publishers in 20 volumes, each containing approximately 600 - 700 pages, but after some printing adjustments, they are publishing it in 12 huge volumes. Since the past two months, we started and have ended summarizing it in 4 volumes. The abridgement will be without takhrij (derivations of a hadith), only the references will be mentioned. The chains of narrations will also be left out. The abridgement is about 4 500 pages, while "al-Jami’ al-Kamil" is approximately 14 000 pages.”
When will you publish this abridgement?

“It will not be published. It is to be translated to other languages. We started translating it to English, Urdu, and Bengali. Muslims should translate it into their own language because the masses simply won’t be able to comprehend 20 volumes of "al-Jami’ al-Kamil".

What should we do if we would like to translate the abridgement of "al-Jami' al-Kamil"?
“Find an organization or an association in your country, if they would like to translate it it, we will send them a sample from the book, but it has to be an organization or an association that are able to translate and also print it. I’ll give it to them for free and I don’t want anything from them in return, and the rights to publish it is not copyrighted. The rights are for all the Muslims.”

In "al-Jami’ al-Kamil", how did you compile these hadiths so that you wouldn’t miss out any sahih hadith?

“We do not claim perfection, verily perfection is only for Allah, but this is what I have completed, and I still continue to research and revise. Now the book is in it’s first edition. The second edition contains some addition (in progress). And the third edition will be the last and final, just like al-Bukhari. He would write his books 3 times. Therefore I’m going to do the same.”

..........

And you know what, the Shaykh was born in a Hindu family. Never in a million years would anyone guessed what he would accomplish. I have in my possession an article he wrote for the university journal while still being an undergraduate student in Madinah, detailing his conversion story among others. I wish I got the time to translate it.

Brother Muhammad siddiqui with the shaykh :

Here is dr. yasir qadhi giving some more insights into shaykh dhiyaur rahman `azami (do not confuse him with dr. mustafa al-`azami the famous refuter of orientalist works)

Shaykh Yasir qadhi says :

What was really impressive about the shaykh was that he was born into a Hindu family, and he was raised a practicing, fervent, ardent Hindu.  By the time he was retiring from his career, he is the Dean of the Faculty of Ḥadīth of the most prestigious Islamic university.  (Of course Azhar graduates will say Azhar is the most prestigious – this is an internal rivalry we have.  I think it is the most prestigious, and if it isn't, then it is in the top three).  Without any embellishment, the College of Ḥadīth is very unique in the Islamic world because it is very rare to have an undergraduate degree in ḥadīth.  Ḥadīth is one of the most advanced sciences of Islam.  The majority of universities in the world only have ḥadīth in the Masters and PhD – it is a specialization.  Madinah is one of only universities in the world that had an actual faculty of ḥadīth studies at the bachelor's level.  He was the Dean of the faculty of ḥadīth and he was raised a practicing Hindu.

Alḥamdulillāh  I became very close to him and his private student and have ijazahs from him.  I visited him frequently in his house, and I wanted to hear his life story directly from him.  One day, I said, “Shaykh, I really want to know how did all of this happen?”  The shaykh in his modesty gave a small summarized story, and I'll add what I know from other sources as well.

The shaykh was born into a Brahman family, which is the elite of the Hindus.  He was raised a practicing and fervent Hindu.  He had been taught to despise Muslims and he never had a Muslim friend.  Brahmans weren't supposed to touch someone who was not a Brahman.  He was taught to completely separate and isolate himself except in his Brahman caste.  He was accepted in university in India and lo and behold, he was assigned a Muslim roommate.

He didn't know what to do between hatred, revulsion, and loathing.  He decided to give him da'wah and convert him to Hinduism.  He decided that he needed to study this man's religion.  He began reading the Qur'an and then read about the life of the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him).  He was fascinated by the life of the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) and asked how he could find out about the life of the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) and was told to read the books of ḥadīth.  This was in the 1950s in India.  He asked, “What is ḥadīth?”  They told him ḥadīth is what the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said.  He asked for the books, and they said they are all in Arabic.  He asked where he could study Arabic, and they told him that he needed to go abroad and study in university, and in order to do that, he needed to be a Muslim in order to be accepted to study Arabic.  He decided that Islam made a lot of sense, so he accepted Islam so he could go and study Arabic and these ḥadīth.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was told there was a university that had just opened in Madinah.  He was told that he should apply there so that perhaps they would teach him Arabic and he could study ḥadīth.  He applied as a new Muslim convert and was accepted amongst the first batches.  He was the first Hindu convert to be accepted to Madinah.

He studied there and caught the “galaxy of stars” (Shaykh Bin Baaz, Shaykh al-Shinqiti and other big names).  He graduated top of the class.  He went to Shaykh Bin Baaz and said that he wanted to study more.  Shaykh Bin Baaz told him that they were a new university and only had a bachelor's program, so he would have to go somewhere else to study.  He asked where he could go, and the shaykh said that the only university at the time was al-Azhar University in Egypt.

He went to al-Azhar in the 60s after getting his bachelor's in Madinah.  He became one of the first graduates of Madinah to get a Master's and PhD from al-Azhar.  His PhD is called “In Defense of Abu Hurayrah.”  In the 60s they were trying to attack the character of ḥadīth by attacking Abu Hurayrah.  He was such a well-known personality that he was then hired in Madinah to become a professor.   When the process started that you had to be a Saudi to be a professor, the shaykh wrote a personal letter to the king to give him Saudi citizenship.  Shaykh Muhammad got Saudi citizenship.

In 1973/74 they opened up the faculty of ḥadīth, and his PhD was in ḥadīth.  He started as an assistant professor in the college of ḥadīth.  Over the next twenty years, he raised his ranks and was the senior ranking professor in the college of ḥadīth and became the dean........ read more in the link

  3. Asalamu alaykum.

Do you have more information about the respected scholars knowledge, memory etc?

Any anecdotes that demonstrate the vastness of his knowledge, what he has memorized, what he is able to quote off memory without books, what he has read, how much he has studied etc etc? I would like to compile a small biography on him and share it around as i am surprised that he is not as famous as he should be for accomplishing something as grand as he has

  10. In the very beginning of the article introducing the Shaikh,in first sentence ending,it is written he was trained to hate Hindus. This seems a serious error. Instead it should be trained to hate muslims before accepting islam.
